“While it is true that in crafting our federal system, the founders stressed that power derives from the people and governmental functions should be carried out at the lowest level practicable, over time developments in commerce and technology have made it increasingly necessary to regulate matters at national or even international level. “

To The Daily Sun,
A constitutional amendment for independence has been proposed this year and while there has been some amount of concern it’s mostly a lack of information that seems to be the problem. I’ve noticed it gaining popular support though as more and more New Hampshirites learn of the benefits this amendment would have for the people of our great state. Like reduced tax bills, more money for state programs, education, and similar.
Some have been concerned that a breakup would lead to the loss of their social security payments. This is simply not the case. Those who were born in the United States or otherwise paid into social security are entitled to it regardless of where they live. Many US citizens get social security while living in foreign countries after retirement.
Others have been concerned that they would lose their US citizenship. This is another misunderstanding of what occurs in such a situation. Citizenship is determined in the United States by birthright, not where you live. In 1972 a US town was ceded to Mexico because of treaties and a change in the river. The government ruled that all persons born in Río Rico between 1906 and 1972 were US citizens by birthright.
There are some legitimate concerns in regard to trade and borders. Trade is not something that would stop. New Hampshire would be one of the wealthier nations on earth post-independence and it would not be in either party's interest to stop trading. Nor is it in either party's interest to put up barriers to trade or significant hurdles at border crossings. Many countries have shared interests and open borders. NH would be little different in terms of military and economic cooperation.
Some think NH is too small to be independent. This is false. An independent New Hampshire would be one of the wealthiest nations and larger in population than many other countries currently in existence. Swearing allegiance to New Hampshire would also be little different than swearing allegiance to the United States given the interests of the two militarily are nearly identical.
Despite the overly simplistic depiction of independence being illegal the US courts have actually ruled otherwise. What is referenced in the argument is a court ruling that declared the means and not the action to be illegal. A declaration of independence need not be legal though anyway. You don’t need permission to leave. The US declaration of independence from England was not legal either remember.
This amendment is a peaceful declaration and not a call to arms. Consequences may be an independent country if the US does not wish to pursue a military invasion- of which NH could simply fold if it did. More than likely we would end up with an improved negotiating position with the United States. The people of the Mariana Islands for instance don’t pay a US income tax- yet are US citizens.

Some libertarians advocate secession, but Sorens has abandoned his original position.
When he first proposed the Free State Project in 2001, he suggested using the threat of secession to gain the state greater autonomy from the federal government. But a week later he backtracked, when his suggestion was welcomed by Confederate loyalists, white supremacists and provocateurs.
Since then, Sorens has written a book and several articles about secession, a course he allows may be appropriate to ethnic, linguistic minorities with well-defined cultures suffering discrimination in large states. Since these criteria do not apply to the 50 states, he dismissed secession by New Hampshire, as advocated for by Rep. Michael Sylvia, R-Belmont, and other libertarians, as “not likely or desirable.”
I don’t know if that is a very accurate portrayal of Jason’s current ideas. Check our podcast for him discussing it fully.

Dear Liberty Block,
I’ve seen NH folks advocate secession, but, come on, surely you’re joking! Not without a massive economy and resources and trade routes that don’t violate US land/airspace! But more importantly, any state that left America wouldn’t be “American” anymore — an America that uniquely allows you to even discuss secession.
Certainly, we don’t need to take on the (astronomical) burdens of running a functional nation-state! What’s the appeal here?
