NHexit Airplane Banner flies late May 2023

"NHexit, the group that put New Hampshire independence legislation in front of the full state house last year, will be taking to the skies the weekend of May 27. But instead of carrying a weapon suite, their one-plane air wing will be towing a pro-independence banner around the state.

In part this is a reaction to Federal raids on New Hampshire’s Bitcoin businesses…Washington is the reason we can’t have nice things.

Who knows more? Where exactly will the plane appear and when?

Details are at “NH secessionists to launch "air force" MemDay weekend

With secession becoming a much more relevant topic in 2023, the question then becomes can it work?

Syracuse Professor Ryan Griffiths studies the topic from a global perspective. He thinks secession can and does work, but not in the United States.

Yet, this is an amazing development. Griffiths doesn't use the same tired arguments that secession is illegal or the War settled it.

Nope.

He just doesn't think the United States has the right cultural ingredients for it to work.

We can quibble about that point, but I love it that a mainstream academic has abandoned the tired Lincolnian arguments that come from Righteous Cause Mythologists.

Griffiths even produced a college level textbook on secession.

That would have been impossible two decades ago.

This means three things:

1. Secessionists need to be taken seriously.

2. "Decentralization" education is working.

3. The Righteous Cause Myth is facing a decline.

Griffiths also argues that the real solution for American political problems can be found in federalism.

This may also be true, as I've argued for a long time.

Regardless, secession and decentralization is now becoming mainstream, and that is a beautiful thing.

I discuss Griffiths's piece on Episode 814 of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Ron Rule:

What would happen if the state you’re living in secedes? Not as much as you think.

First, let’s get something out of the way:

YOU ARE A US CITIZEN BY BIRTHRIGHT. That doesn’t change if the state you happen to be living in secedes.

You can still travel freely to all states and won’t need a passport to do so. You will still receive Social Security and Medicare. If you have a passport, it will still be valid, renewable, and accepted in all of the same countries. Your bank account isn’t going anywhere. Any property you own or debt you hold, even if it’s in other states, will still be yours. You will still owe federal taxes (bummer).

You’re still an American, no different than an American living in Canada or anywhere else around the globe, and as such will still receive all of the rights and benefits you’re entitled to. Unless you separately and voluntarily renounce your US citizenship, none of that changes.

So what DOES change?

Politicians in other states — who you have no right to vote for or against anyway — can no longer pass legislation that’s enforceable where you live. The US government will have no more jurisdiction in your state than they have over Canada or Mexico.

And while we’re on this subject, I want to be clear on something: Your newly-seceded state would become an independent free state. If multiple states seceded, you would NOT automatically be part of a new union with those states — the decision to remain independent or form / join any new unions would be separate and voted on separately.

In a peaceful secession (remember, we’re talking about a separation like Brexit, not a Civil War) federal facilities in your state will likely close after an agreed transition period, so if you work for the federal government you may have to relocate to another state to keep that job, similarly to how military transfers work currently.

All functions of state and local government would still continue. Your state would no longer receive federal funds, so it may need to adjust your tax rates and/or government service offering to compensate, however any state-level increases would be eligible for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion — meaning if you decide NOT to renounce your US citizenship and continue to pay federal taxes, if your state charged you $1 more, you would pay $1 less to the US. And those who DID renounce or relinquish US citizenship would pay nothing.

While Medicare and Social Security (including SS disability) payments would continue indefinitely, federal welfare would not after the calendar year of secession. If your state wanted to continue with a welfare program, the voters would need to vote to create one and pay for it from state funds.

Outside of that, your day to day life would be no different. The US dollar would still be the currency used for transactions, at least until your state created its own currency and provided a very long (multi-year) exchange window. Again, voters would decide if and when the state should produce its own currency.

All in, it’s the ultimate transfer of power away from politicians in Washington DC to the people and the locally-elected representatives you actually have the power to elect. Free people choosing their own destiny and shedding federal overreach and control. Liberty in our lifetime is possible — so long as the will to achieve it exists.

Secession Karen … corrected

In fact, Article 7 of the New Hampshire Constitution reads that “The people of this State have the sole and exclusive right of governing themselves as a free, sovereign, and independent State; and do, and forever hereafter shall, exercise and enjoy every power, jurisdiction, and right, pertaining thereto, which is not, or may not hereafter be, by them expressly delegated to the United States of America in Congress assembled.”
